PINE SISKIN #136!!!!

Not much was seen yesterday other than the geese but I did manage to pull down #136 with some Pine Siskin behind the hotel I am staying in. A life bird!! #250 something. I also got to see an awesome Ring-necked Pheasant alongside of the highway. Today we will start looking for raptor nests and any other signs of breeding activity.

Help me understand how you can look for nesting raptors in Fargo, ND. Isn't it a bit early?

Yes it is probably a bit early for them to be nesting but as I have been told it is possible and it is mandated that areas to be used for construction of a pipeline be checked before any disturbance of the area can take place. Active nesting is not the only consideration but beginning nest building or even courting behavior are also grounds for leaving an area undistubed. I am a worker bee and am not the one to decide if it is too early or not. I have been asked to look and am doing so. We have found and identified an active Great-horned Owl nest. Raptors were the original focus but that has also now changed to include any bird protected by the MBTA which obviously is also unusually early even more so than raptors.

I forgot to mention that I said we are looking for raptor nests not just "nesting raptors" as anonymous put it. Raptor nests also includes nests from last year that could become potentially active nests this year as well.

Those damn anonymi! Just very curious on the reasoning. Can't wait to hear about the reasoning for the methods. I am guessing the boilermakers will be finished with basketball before the first raptor pair copulates. ;-) Your pretty close to the Canadian border so you better watch out for the border guards...and have your passports ready. Do you think this is funny.....?

I had my first broadwing last week so they should be making their way up soon, maybe.

Is that you Brian Smartypants!? We drove right up to the Canadian border today looking for a way to a location and had to turn around. I was afraid we were going to be chased down and strip searched for that! It has been very birdless for the most part at most sites. We are making our way south so eventually we should start running into birds.
