Winter Birding

Winter biridng is fun because you never know what you might find in one of those big flocks of birds. A Rusty Blackbird in a huge flock of blackbirds, or a Greater White-fronted Goose hidden in the hundreds of sky rats. Who cares if Sibley doesn't think you saw the "Greenland" race....you know you did. His glasses wearin' ass can't imagine what your 20/20 vision is capable of. Scoters at your local pond. Crossbills at the cemetary. A Snowy Owl! Who knows? So get your long johns on and get out there and find a winter jewel.

not sure why scott is so excited about western grebes? oh, that's right...he's a 'homer' that has never been across the mississippi river. common birds like that make him happy when they come to him

I hope everyone will join me in dedicating my winter birding to Chris Henry!

Chris Henry?

I've crossed the Mississippi River a couple times, but not made it further then 30 miles or so:) I don't like to stray into enemy territory much.

First CBC Monday.

Winter birding truly is crazy. Got an indigo bunting female, a brown thrasher, several fox sparrows, two barn owls (not in CBC area), a merlin,75 greater white fronted geese, watched a Cooper's hawk take out a male cardinal, and counted about 800 horned larks.

alright...who is the jackass barking about Barn Owls? You can't spout off Barn Owls and not give a location...especially if you are close to Cincy! jb

the barn owl jack is Somershoe...not sure if I would trust his i.d. though b/c in his next breath, he mentioned a cooper's hawk taking out a cardinal. it was probably the same merlin he had seen earlier (anyone that's spent time birding cape may w/ him knows he can't i.d. accipiters, which he sees regularly...who knows how he would butcher owl i.d.!). No snow buntings in those flocks of horned larks, huh?

It was me, RAS. Got the barn owls over between Evansville and Booneville, IN. That's where I did the Christmas counts, jackholes!!

Come on! I can ID a barn owl. Accipiters? maybe, maybe not.

So when are we having a birding/trapping trip to Peabody?

Was wondering the same thing the other day. Needs to happen again. That was a fun day!

A fun day was watching you squirm in pain with kidney stones.

We'll have to plan a day in Feb or March.
